The 10 Best National Parks in the U.S.

TIME — This tranquil Oregon lake, famed for the clarity and color of its water, conceals a violent past. About 7,700 years ago Mount Mazama violently erupted—blowing its top off, collapsing in on itself and forming a steep-sided caldera, which we now know as Crater Lake. Over time the caldera collected snow and rainwater, transforming itself into the deepest lake in the United States, with a depth of 1,943 feet.
