With a Book, Music and Lyrics by Tony Award Winner Jason Robert Brown (“Urban Cowboy,” “Bridges of Madison County,” “Honeymoon in Vegas”) “The Last Five Years” is an intensely personal look at the relationship between writer Jamie Wellerstein and struggling actress Cathy Hiatt. The show’s unconventional structure lets Cathy tell her story backwards while Jamie tells his story chronologically; the two characters only meeting once, at their engagement and wedding in the middle of the show. Told predominately through song and from both points of view, this gem of a musical is an emotionally powerful and intimate tale about two ambitious New Yorkers in their twenties who fall in and out of love over the course of five years.
“Short, bittersweet and nearly perfect, Brown has come up with a winning combination of music and book...” ~ Variety
“Let it in and it knocks you back on your heels. Just like love.” ~ Rolling Stone
Born in Tarrytown, NY, Jason Robert Brown began writing music at seven years old. His influences range from Billy Joel and Carole King all the way to show tune legends George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein. However, to quote him: “To be an aspiring writer for the musical theatre is to worship regularly at the Church of Steve [Sondheim].”
“The Last 5 Years” runs September 2nd through October 4th. Directed by Camelot’s Artistic Director Livia Genise, “The Last 5 Years” features musical direction by John Taylor and Choreography by Amanda Andersen. The show stars Andersen as actress Catharine Haitt and Nathan Monks as writer Jamie Wellerstein. Musicians for “The Last 5 Years” include John Taylor (Synthesizer and Keyboards) Beth Martin (Violin) and Sue Flynn (Cello).
Says director Genise: “At our first production meeting, I was asked: who is responsible for the relationship not working? And guess what- there are two sides to the story! Maybe it’s Jamie; maybe it’s Cathy. Maybe they were just together as long as they were supposed to be. I think our audience will ultimately decide based on whose story resonates with them the most.”
The production team for “The Last 5 Years” includes Brian O’Connor on sound and audio/video design, properties mistress Shelly Hall, Evan Carbonne on lighting design, with set design, construction, technical direction and carpentry by Don Zastoupil.
